Hi Experts,

We have purchased nav license,we are going to run different businesses like trading and manufacturing and retail as well. license details are attached for your reference.

Please share your valuable suggestions on below questions:

My questions:

1.how to handle different business companies with same license. one license allow us to create multiple companies so i am thinking to create 2 different sql database for single license, is that advisable As i knew that we can have separate companies but if we do any development in a single data base (tables, pages, codeunits, reports) changes applicable to all companies which are running on same database.

2. license is for sql server or for windows server: theoretically one license file is for one windows server is it correct or for database.

    Hi Sat,

According to the information From Alexander, it is better to put all companies to one database, and if we do any development in a single data base (tables, pages, codeunits, reports),  changes are applicable to all companies, you can develop setup for new funtions if they are enabled for one company. This can be developed flexibly.

    RE: Nav License Details

Technically you would be able to put the same license into two different databases, but you should consider if this would be valid in terms of the licensing rules.

In particular, the license agreement says that same license can be used by affiliated companies. However, the license is limited by number of users, which you are not allowed to cheat with. That is, imagine a situation, when you had purchased a license with 20 users. If you would install the same license to two different databases, you will technically be able to give access SIMLTANEOUSLY to 20 users in one database and 20 users in the other database, which in total would be 40 - which would mean you are actually putting 20 extra users without licensing them properly, which is not allowed (however technically you still can do that).

So there are two major options in your case:

    1. Keep all companies in the same database (which is usually the case), and use the same license for all companies.

    2. Split the license. That is, you purchase a separate server license and ask Microsoft to transfer part of the users (and part of the objects) from existing license to be transferred to new license, providing a proof that those two companies are affiliated.

If you still would decide to put license to two separate databases, in order not to violate the license agreement, you would need SOMEHOW to control that the total simultaneous quantity of users in both databases would not exceed the licensed user quantity (and still I guess you would violate it as you would need a second server license to be purchased).
