Dynamics AX Client freezes and goes to Non Responding State

We have experienced some situations where client freezes when users make use of filters (or Ctrl + G) on forms vendtablelistpage and purchtablelistpage. Generally the user closes Dynamics Ax and the query remains running on Sql Server. In this cases, the user opens a new Ax session, makes a new search (with sucess this time), and works with the new session normally. But the old query is still running on Sql server. Kill the old query does not affect the new session of the user, but it decreases the use of cpu on Sql server.

Some users report that the first filter runs fast while performance of subsequents filters are going decreasing.

All the users are working on terminal server sessions. There is nothing on event viewer. The property FirstFast are configured to "yes" in the queries.

I'm thinking that it can be related with "max buffer size" that is configured to 84. We are using Dynamics Ax 2012 R3 CU8.

Can anyone help?

    Hi Paulo,

It could be related to anything. The standard setting of the max buffer size is 48. The setting 84 could be an overkill and will consume more memory.

It could also be related to searching on non indexed fields. If the servers are virtualized it could be related to e.g. overallocation of resources.

You have to monitor several servers and namely the SQL machine on its resources. Also look at oerformance reports from SQL which could provide information on long running queries and missing indexes.

    Thank you André.

Including more information: The AOS machines (03) are physical. The Sql server is physical too. We are constantly monitoring for missing indexes and I think that is not the answer for this case.  The queries remain running for 30 / 40 minutes or until we kill the process.  I think that missing indexes can't explain why the first time it runs fast, decreasing performance after that. This queries make use of cursors and sql reports frequently show just fetch_api_cursor...

My best shot is that the cause of this issue is the use of additional memory by the setting of max buffer size on clients using terminal server sessions, but why sql server don't kill the query when session is finalized by the user? Is it normal?

I have a feeling it has to do with dormant records that you might have in your tables. I had a client who had similar issues and the reason was that there were way too many records in the table. So, cleaning up is one option.

Other option could be increasing the buff size? ( I am not totally sure if you should go this path though) .

Increasing the RAM on the AOS/Appl servers.... not sure if you'd be interested in that?

    Thanks,

    Khosla

    Hi Paulo,

Have a look at the next blog related to parameter sniffing. This might be your culprit.

    update (forgot the link):

Hi, Kosla. Thanks for try to help.

Yesterday I included one more AOS server. And all the servers have memory and cpus enought, but the problem persists. I'm now evaluating in a test environment, the solution provided by the link posted for André.
