Dynamics 365 for Field Service On-Premise Sizing

Hi, guys!

I need your help here. We need to do a sizing for a potential implementation of Dynamics 365 for Field Service, but it should be installed on-premise. I'm reading a lot of documents the last two days and to be honest - I got really confused. I have no experience with D365 Field Service and I hoped to find a planning/implementation guide just as we have them with AX for example. Unfortunately I couldn't find such info. Or at least one that gives me what I need.

What I found is this: https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh699840.aspx

This gives some clue on what the D365 Server requires, but the estimation is based on 320 users benchmark and I'm not sure how to extrapolate it to fit my 1000 users sizing goal. Also this doesn't say which module is considered - Operations only, Field Service too, or...?

Moreover, there is not any detailed information about the available system topology architectures, nor any advice. It doesn't tell how to implement availability solutions, redundancy and etc.

Ultimately, I need two things:
To know what are the standard topologies that MS suggests so that we know how many separate servers we need and how to make them redundand;
A way to calculate the needed server CPU/Memory size.

Is there any document or source where I can find this info? Or maybe some of you has experience with this?

    Since Field Service is based on the Dynamics 365 platform previously known as Dynamics CRM, you can search for some white papers on that topic.  Here is one I found that has some good information in it.

    www.microsoft.com/.../details.aspx

    Without doing a through discovery of your requirements of 1000 users, I would say that you will need at minimum (2) web servers, (1) Async Server, (1) Very powerful SQL server probably with SQL mirroring, and ancillary servers to provide ADFS access, Domain servers, etc.  An environment for that many users on-premise is not an easy setup.

    Have you considered Online to save yourself the trouble?  Or is the service not available in your area?

    Hi, Thanks for the link - quite interesting studies. :)

    The service is actually available and we initially suggested cloud based solution indeed. However, the customer is in a specific sector and has some concerns about data security. Although we explained it's quite hard (if not impossible) to make your own data center as secure as MS data centers, they insisted on keeping all data in their premises.

    In the end, we managed to get in touch with an MS expert who suggested 4x front-end servers, 1+1 back-end servers, an ADFS farm with 2 machines and a decent DB server with 8-cores, 128GB RAM and a high-availability solution.
