RSAT / Task recorder - is it possible to validate which fields are mandatory?

Hi

as part of regression checks, I would like to validate which fields/controls are visible as default and also ensure that mandatory fields are still mandatory in subsequent releases.

Is there an easy way to validate these things? I do see an alert/error message when I attempt to save a form without completing all fields but the alerts that I see (amber colour + triangle) are not within the view of Task Recorder (ie I cannot select it or add a validation step). Is there a guide that gives a lower-level view of validation and what is possible?

As a fallback I suppose I could validate that user is not allowed to save a record but I'm not sure this would give me enough detail. The Task Recorder seems better suited to 'happy path' only is my impression?

Regards

Dan

    Hi Dan,

To ensure the fields are still mandatory, you can create tests where you leave some of those fields empty. The expected outcome of the test would be an error in that case. If it continuous, the field is not mandatory anymore. However, I would personally focus on completing test cases for your primary processes with high impact to your business.

May I also ask you why you have this concern? Do you expect a lot of scenarios where a field is not mandatory anymore? Or is this related to the mandatory by personalization feature?

    Hi Andre,

thank you for your reply. To address the first item -  when mandatory fields are not completed and tester tries to submit form for example, an error is displayed and tester is unable to progress to the next screen. My issue is that the error displayed occurs as a banner across the top of the form but it is not interactable with Task Recorder. I might want to right-click on the banner to validate it in some way but Task Recorder is not shown as an option in the context menu.

The mandatory fields in our solution are typically provided by customization or configuration, rather than OOB. Due to the amount of customization there is a desire to provide automated test coverage to check some of these fields, certainly for key processes. Unsure what a typical approach would be/should be however, the team is still finding their feet with test approach and tooling.

We made a decision not to use Selenium but it's possible we are still in that mindset! I would still be interested to know if it possible to validate error messages however :)

    Regards,

    Dan
