Increasing Length of Comments Field

Is there any good reason not to increase the comments fields (particularly in areas which will not directly be posted areas, such as contacts [comments table = 5061] and jobs [comment table = 97]) above the basic 80 characters?  In researching this, the only reason that I have seen is to have backward compatibility with ancient versions of a pre-SQL Navision database.

Thanks.

    hi,

increasing text fields can cause problems. you can only give it a try with a test database. a good idea is to run a "where used"-function (e.g. OM-Tools from idyn.net) to check, where the field is used (functions, ...).

You can use multiple lines in comments then why do you want to increment?

As Mohana said you can use multiple lines for comments any any special reason for doing this?

Modifying comment is not a huge impact, but you need to modify all the other locations as well. It will take some time and effort and my suggestion is to use multiple lines without doing any modifications.

    Hi,

As mentioned by others, it may have a huge impact and may give overflow error.  Increasing the length doesn't seem to be a wise decision because tomorrow, if the new size is insufficient, you may have to increase it again and will lead to square one.

    Best Regards,

    MMV
