Can you you not send automated emails through contacts and account-based sequences? I've only seen automated email step option for leads and opportunities.

I think this is by design, there is currently no official documentation that specifically describes that sequences of record type contact and account can send automatic emails.
This new feature is designed to convert prospects into customers, so it may only target the two types of leads and opportunity.
