Hello,

I am trying to use the standard OLAP Cube in AX2012. I would like to know how can I use the budget figures? For example in sales cube I would like to compare to sales product line / customer / are real figures vs budget. Do I have to load any file on AX2012 in order to profit in cubes of all analysis targeted.  May thanks for your help

    Hello ivan60000,

    What do you want to compare? Sales revenue with budget revenue? Cost of sales actual vs budget? I think you need to get a clear understanding on that first.

    The second thing that you need to find out is how budget data are recorded? Are all budgets tracked in the AX budget module? Are some budget amounts tracked outside AX in Excel that require a direct upload into your cube?

    Once you got those basic question figured out you can start building/working with your cube.

    All the best,

    Ludwig

    How to query the analysis services data varies a bit depending on where you want to show it.  But the general idea is to create a connection to the analysis services database and then send it a query to get the data you want.

    MDX is the query language for analysis services.  There should be some example of it on msdn.  You can get started by using Sql Management Studio to browse the budget cube.

    Drag in the measures you want and add any dimension attributes you want to group by and add any desired filters.  Then click the Design Mode toolbar button to see the query.

    For more info, if you are trying to create an SSRS report see

    If you are trying to query analysis services database from x++ code, there's an example of this at axbytes.blogspot.co.uk/.../query-ssas-from-dynamics-ax-using-mdx.html

    Hi Ludwig. Thanks for answer.

    To be clear on my request I would like to compare actual sales revenues vs budget revenu.

    I don't know at this step how way I Will use :

    1 - All budget tracked in budget AX module

    2 - Budget tracked outsider in Excel

    If you can help me to understand the process for each one it will be easier to me to fix the correct way. Thanks for your help.

    Hello ivan60000,

    From my perspective it is alway better having all budget data in AX than in separate Excel sheets that you upload directly into your cube. I mean what else would you expect as an answer from an AX consultant :-)

    (Please note that the budget planning functionality is actually also using Excel sheets to upload the budget data first into the AX budgeting module from where you can start doing your actual vs. budget analysis)

    Yet, where and how budget values are tracked depend on many things such as

    * Your budgeting process

    * Who is doing the budgeting (finance, accounting, CFO, sales, ...)

    * How many people are involved in the budgeting process

    * How many companies are involved in the budgeting process and whether all of those companies are run in AX

    * The analysis tools that you are using. Often companies use third party software for their actual-budget analysis and do not want that AX users see some of their "delicate" budget data

    * The time and effort required for bringing the budget data into AX compared to an direct cube upload

    * Whether you are using budget control in AX (in this case you have to bring your Budget data into AX first)

    * etc.

    I found that the question for 1) or 2) is often a highly "political" question that depends on many things that do not necessarily have something to do with AX and your analysis tools you are using. You can only clarify this with your colleagues and your AX/cube project sponsor.

    Hope those comments help you at least a bit in making your decision.

    All the best,

    Ludwig
