How to use UTM tagging with Dynamics 365 Marketing

This guide will walk you through implementing UTM tag management in Dynamics 365 Marketing. This is a custom solution to a problem we were facing. (at the time this was written: (26-5-2020) no efforts were made by Microsoft to implement an OOB connection with google tag manager/analytics).

the problem/solution: We would like to see how effective our campaigns/ads are by tracking which ads/campaigns lead to won deals/opportunities. It is by no means a perfect solution, but for the simple usecase of tracking the source of your leads it's perfect. (we bring everything together in the end with Power BI. Later more on that if people are interested). 

Requirements:

  • Dynamics 365 Marketing instance
  • Wordpress
  • Handl UTM tag manager plugin for Wordpress
  • Javascript/Jquery additional script
  • 3 new fields related to the Lead entity
