D365 for F&O used the concept of packages instead of layers.

Package can consist of multiple models. In D365 packages are used to develop customised or extension code. While deployment, customised package is created as a deployment package and upload to asset library. Which inturn is deployed to sandbox and then live production.

from 8+ version, it's only extensions so think only of packages

unless working on code provided by ISV/VAR which allows overlayering then layers become important
