Installation Error 1603 . GP 10 Education Version

Hi, experts, hope you can help me as I'm a bit frustrated now ... probably because of my basic undestanding of the GP software, yet .

I've been trying to install the CD with a GP 10.0  120 trial Education version in my XP laptop and always getting the same error 1603. Now for 2 days.. .

I installed .NET already ( 3.5) , and read other forums suggesting to install SQL server, so I did it.I have admin user permissions, although I'm not a big expert in the process, as you can imagine. Just need to learn how GP works.

The error code shows up during the D:/bin/sql/setup.exe process execution, 5 minutes after starting the installation.

Appreciate if you have any guidance

Be logged in as someone with full admin rights and turn User Account Control (UAC) off when doing the installation. You can look under Control Panel->System->Administrative Settings>Computer Management and then Groups to make sure you are under the Admin group.

Thank you for the prompt answer, Richard.  I am looking for that option in my XP laptop and it did not show up. Looks UAC is not available in XP computers, although I might be wrong. Any other suggestion is appreciated.

UAC is not applicable to XP. Are you running XP SP3?

Yes, XP Service Pack 3 .

Are you trying to install additional modules or just the core GP modules. If you are still stuck send me a private message and I will hook up to your computer and try to get GP installed.

    Hi Ollan,

I don't want to kill your fun of trying out GP... but XP (even SP3) is not a supported platform to install the server side portion of Dynamics GP... It may well be OK for the client installation, but the not for the server part. MS requirements are minimum Win Server 2003 or 2008. You may try your luck with a VPC setup (virtual machine with a server version), if your system has enough RAM and CPU to hold it...

@Richard. Yes, just the core. The CD came with the student's book and needed for the accounting class.

@Béat, that's probably true. The system req. Document says that XP SP2 is ok. Is that a typo? Or maybe as you said, xp is simply for the client? Do you recommend to upgrade to Vista? I just need to install this for my accounting class...

    Thanks again for the feedback

If you are going to change OS I would go to W7. We actually had one client running GP 10 on their WXP workstaton. Even though it is not recommended, it will work. The GP installation prgram does not invoke SQL so I am surprised the error is coming from there. Now I assume you have installed SQL Server Express 2005 or 2008 first and then attempt to install GP 10? SQL does not come into play until you run GP Utilties. After installing SQL you will need to create a DSN in order to connect to GP.

Thank you . I hope this clarifies a bit more. This is the sequence I have after inserting the CD.  The autorun initiates the installation. After 10 seconds, it does a  Software system check ( to check that I have .NET, SQL, etc,etc )  , and then it asks a couple of questions, the regions ( US or Canada ), and the password for the "sa" account, and also the license agreement. Then, the actual installation starts and I got below window. As you can see, it looks there is something about the SQL package, but not sure what it is, indeed:

....  One/two minutes later, the installation reports the 1603 error : installation failed .

Just to check ( actually , I've been trying multiple things ,probably 15 times with different ideas ) , I decided to delete SQL 2005 ( it comes with the CD ) and install SQL 2008 , and upgrade .NET 2 ( from the CD )  to .NET 3.5 . Still getting the 1603 error at the same time.

I hope it helps. Let me know if you want me to include more screen shots.

    Thanks for help
