Change Financial Dimension description field size

(0) ShareShare

Hi,

The current description field for financial dimensions is limited to 60 char. We have recently liked to a new system that generated contracts and are sending us the ContractIDs and Names via AIF. unfortunately we have had a few of them fail as AX is limited to 60 char and rejects the data coming in. Is it an easy task to adjust the description field size?

Thanks

    Hi Shristi,

Usually, AX will trim the value if it exceeds the string size. Possibly you are using xml where a limit is set? Or custom logic which evaluates the incoming length?

You can enlarge EDT in field length, however, this dimension data model is not the most easy one. You need to verify all occasions where dimension values can be stored. Also check code internally if the descriptions are store in a variable with other EDTs. I do think it is possible, but it has a risk. If you intend to upgrade sooner or later to Microsoft Dynamics 365, you have to review if the same solution can be applied on the current version as well.

    Hello Shristi MP,

Is it possible that you just trim it?

As Andre mentioned, from a technical perspective it might be possible but you can run into problems doing that.

One of those might be your financial reports that are generated in the Management Reporter. Some of them might not work properly anymore and you might have to reset the data mart and refresh them. That is one of the smaller issues that comes to my mind when making such a change.

Do people really care about the description of your findims when it comes to reporting?

If the answer to this question is no, then discuss internally whether this change is really needed.

    Best regards,

    Ludwig

    Hi Ludwig and Andre,

These were my thoughts exactly. I needed clarification as the data is coming from a custom-designed system and I asked them to just truncate the description coming through. I can now go back and confirm that decision.

Thank you very much for your help!
