Hello!
Is there a way or is it even possible that the system assigns automatically "X" dimension to everything that gets posted in "Y" account?

Hi Raokman,
as for AR and AP, this would require account type default dimensions for customers and vendors. And to have useful data, you would also need application postings by department - which is a customization, and not an easy one at first consideration.
with best regards
Jens
Hi Raokman,
if you do it this way, the source of your default dimension should be the item and the fixed asset. With some minor customization (I know, I know), you can preset the departments by location code, item category, FA location code or FA posting group.
Because you don't have a default department, you can only give the property "Code mandatory" to the records. But it is the right source. To require department code with every item and fixed asset, it would be sufficient to define account type dimensions - like Alexander suggested - for the tables 27 and 5600:
This way, all item and FA postings need to have a department code. This should even be completely independent from the dimension priority, which can change/define the order of sources for a dimension value.
Before implementing it I suggest to try it out on a test system, and do your batch runs to make sure there isn't a whole left in the logic.
with best regards
Jens
We track inventory value in our GL by department.
We also track fixed assets by department.
We track AR and AP by department.
We don't need a DEFAULT department, we need to be able to assign departments on the fly, line by line, usually to the same account. We need to post entries by Department AND Account. Not every account DEFAULTS to a single department in a Journal.
Every time we answered a 'conflict', it sounds as though every line using that conflicted account would get changed away from what we had previously entered for that account on another line.
And setting up the Default departments per the above links seem to require setting them up every time a new account is created.
Raokman, how about using Account Type Default Dimensions for G/L Account table?
Yes, it is possible, but you would need in advance to tell the system that it is needed. That is, for every "Y" account you would need to setup Default Dimension value on the account card:
Here is a reference to official source: https://msdn.microsoft.com/ru-ru/library/hh171183(v=nav.90).aspx
Here is a good article on the matter: https://navtipsandtraining.com/2014/04/05/default-dimensions/
I disagree.
If the original design requires MANDATORY dimensions for GL accounts, you should be able to set up that requirement up front, for all current and all future accounts added in the Chart of Accounts.
And how exactly do I enter a mandatory dimension value for a balancing account?
I think it is how it should be, because if a new account is been added to the system then system will not know which dimension it should tag along. Therefore it should be a user's responsibility to tag relevant dimensions to the account.
The issue is that you have to remember to do that for EVERY new account that gets added to the Chart. You can't just say "for this Chart of Account, these dimensions are mandatory, now and for every account that gets added, even by someone who may not be fully aware of the need and implications".
another issue I haven't seen addressed is for Balancing Account type entries, how do you put in the associated, MANDATORY, dimension(s) to be used by the balancing account?
If your requirement is to tag a specific Dimension to every transaction that is been posting to a selected GL account, then Microsoft Dynamics NAV have a function for that.
Go to Chart of account and then double click on the G/L Account. Once the master card is been open click on the Dimension or use the shortcut key of "Ctrl +Shift +D".
Once the default dimension window is opened you can select the dimensions that you want to tag for each transaction.
(Test is by posting an entry through a journal)
Hi Polux1986
Your Requirement is not Clear and its better if you can little explain it. you can select default dimension to G/L Account but that will not get automatically posted during the Transaction you have to select the Dimension then only G/L Get posted with Dimension.
If your G/L Must have a Specific Dimension then you can go to Edit G/L Account and go to Dimension from the dimension select dimension you want and Dimension Value Code and Value Posting to Same code
This way this G/L will demand every time when entries getting posted to this the selected dimension for this account but user has to select the same dimension on his transaction otherwise system will give you an error.
Thanks
