NAV 4.03 Item tracking serial lot number for item cannot be fully applied

We are trying to post a shipment and the item has a longer lot number 18 characters including spaces. We obtain the error message Item tracking serial lot number for item cannot be fully applied. I checked the item card and this lot number is longer than the other receipts with the exception of one past receipt for the same exact item lot combo. We have shipped form both of these receipts in the past without an error message. I feel like it is saying it is too long, but wouldn't it get rejected at the receiving stage? Also, why were we able to ship some items from this lot without error?
