GP 2016 on RDS server 2016

Posted on by 5

Hello,

We are trying to give our Finance staff the ability to access GP 2016 remotely.  Our GP 2016 sql server is running on a Windows Server 2012 R2 datacenter virtual machine with SQL 2016 on it.  The application server with the shared .dic files is running on a separate virtual server that is also running Win Server 2012 R2 datacenter.

We created a windows server 2016 datacenter RDS server and installed GP 2016 on it.  We can remote into this server, natively, and open GP 2016 with no issues; but when we try to access it from the RDS web portal it looks like it is going to come up when we see the MS Dynamics logo, but then displays this Dexterity Runtime window and never opens.  The Dexterity Runtime window just stays there and does not disappear (please see screeshot below).  Has anyone run into this issue?  Please advise....it would be greatly appreciated.

I've written a while ago about the various options of using GP from a TS (or Citrix) server..

You could also use a batch file to launch GP, which offers more flexibility than the simple entry in the RDP published apps list.

Thank you very much for your reply Gavin.  That was it.  I went into properties of the GP remote app on the RDS server and added the parameter ""C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Dynamics\GP2016\Dynamics.exe" Dynamics.set."  Once I did this, I logged onto the RDweb portal and it opened right up.

    Thanks again!

    Hi,

Although I don't know much about the configuration of RDS environments what I can say is that is exactly what happens if you were to double click DYNAMICS.EXE on a local install rather than using a shortcut that passes in the DYNAMICS.SET file.

For example the shortcut on a desktop should look like this:

If I were to go straight to the DYNAMICS.EXE in windows explorer and double click it (therefore not passing in a DYNAMICS.SET file) I get the same result as you:

Therefore I suspect the RDS configuration is using DYNAMICS.EXE as its shortcut and it should use the EXE and also the DYNAMICS.SET file in the shortcut.

The DYNAMICS.SET file contains all the paths to the dictionaries so is essential for GP to load. Incidentally in the window you have if you click  "File > Open Launch File" and browse to the DYNAMICS.SET file and select it GP will likely load.

Therefore I think the first thing to check is to ensure the shortcut being used is correct.

    I hope this helps.

    Thanks

    Gavin
