Error with Status Reason field

I just modified the Status Reason field on a Case. I was changing around the status reasons by adding a few more. It crashed while I was doing it. So I then reopened the field an re-did the changes. I added 2 more active status reasons.

N.B. These 2 new status also existed under the ‘Canceled’ status. I left them there as I was going to play around with the user experience and see what we wanted to drive users to do.

I then published the changes. Now when I try to open a case I get this error message.

ERR-MSG-1.png

And when I try to open the Status Reason field in the Customisations/Solutions area, I get this:

ERR-MSG-2.png

I can open other fields on the case. I think something may have gone wrong when it crashed, or it may have a problem with the same status reasons under both Active and Canceled. Can anyone help?

    Hi,

I would suggest you the clear the cache after you published the changes. It could be there is a cache in metadata.

Thanks Tom. So while it fixed itself in Dev, I then deployed the solution to UAT, and guess what error is appearing again!! My only hope is that UAT miraculously sorts itself again. Unless there is a way to fix it properly?

Gotta love when stuff starts working again for no reason at all.

i'm not a developer, but I believe the important part of your error is here:

<Message>System.Web.HttpUnhandledException (0x80004005): Exception of type 'System.Web.HttpUnhandledException' was thrown. ---> System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.
       at Microsoft.Crm.Application.InlineEdit.JsonWrapperFactory.CreateForStatusAttribute(StatusAttributeMetadata attributeMetadata, String entityLogicalName)

It looks like when loading up your form, you run into a null error when checking entity metdaata (including things like status). So if the system managed to partially create the new status reason field before you encountered your error (but not completed it), it could have caused the error to occur. The system essentially saw an invalud or null portion of a status, which it couldn't handle.

That's my guess at least, again someone who is a developer might have a bit more insight. Glad it is working again though!

Thanks Tom. I just retried things, and it's miraculously working now. Literally nothing has changed as it's only me working on the CRM, and I've been busy raising a support ticket with Microsoft since it happened.

I am however interested to find out what happened though. I've attached the log file.

Posting the log file for the error would likely be the easiest way to find some answers on the forum. Absent of that, do you have another environment where this change has not been made? You can always try and reimport the entity (or if you are on Dynamics 2016 or above just the status reason field on the entity) to overwrite whatever error was caused during the crash.

Regardless, if you post the log file it may shed some more insight into what actually happened to cause the error.
