Dynamics 365 Finance and Supply chain management Customization

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

Hello Expert,

We are planning to upgrade AX 2012 R3 to Dynamics 365 Finance and Supply Chain Management. We have optimized the license requirements of Base, Attach and activity user based on the latest license guide.

In addition to this how the customization possible in D365 SAAS model and what additional license / components required for the same?

Thanks in advance for your time and valuable input.

Best Regards,

Ranjith Surendran

One more thing, the required dev components are exactly the same in cloud and on-prem. The development process is exactly the same.

Also, in the near future Microsoft is enabling you to run the build as a service in Azure DevOps. Then you don't need any server anymore. But of course you still have to pay something for the hosted build. Most likely it's even less than the cost I mentioned above.

Build server is not technically mandatory but in reality you should really have it in order to have predictable and good quality Application Lifecycle Management. Only this way you can be 100% sure what you build and deploy, and that everything is in source control.

It's very easy to set up and cheap to host either in your own datacenter or Azure. We host it in Azure and only run the server for ~1.5 hrs per day for our nightly build. It costs perhaps 20-30 EUR a month. Don't save on this one!

    Dear All,

Thanks for all of your time and valuable inputs.

Now it's clear about the customization by creating extensions in D365 and some cases it required to redesign.

As I mentioned, we are planning to D365 SAAS model not into D365 On Prem, then as mentioned by Mr. Nikolaos, the additional components license required for customization in D365 SAAS are,

** - Every developer must have Visual Studio Professional license

** - Every developer needs their own dev system from Azure subscription

And what it is  "Additionally you need one build server which is basically similar to the dev systems"? Is it compulsory one?

    Appreciate your confirmation these.

    Thanks & Regards,

About licenses and components that you require for customization:

    - Every developer must have Visual Studio Professional license

    - Every developer needs their own dev system, which you can host either in your own data center (downloadable VHD) or in your Azure subscription (Cloud hosted environments). Microsoft is also selling "Tier 1 add-on" environments which can be used for development, and come with a fixed monthly price, but I think that option is being phased out in the future.

    - Additionally you need one build server which is basically similar to the dev systems.

As mentioned by others, the customization experience is very different to AX2012 and you need to redesign many of your customizations. You can't anymore customize the standard Microsoft objects directly, instead you must create extensions.

    Hello Ranjith,

    For license:

If you would like to work on D365 Fin&Ops cloud version, you need to get new license from Microsoft Sales team, not sure if any discount may have for old customer. If you would like to work on D365 Fin&Ops On-premise version, it looks like you can do the transfer directly.  You can give a call to sales team as below for more information:

    support.office.com/.../contact-support-for-business-products-admin-help-32a17ca7-6fa0-4870-8a8d-e25ba4ccfd4b

    For customization update:

Because the customization way between D365 and ax 2012 has huge difference, you need to collect all customization in AX 2012, then evaluate it if it can be achieved by extension way as mentioned by ievgen. Honestly, some of customizations can not be achieved in D365. Even for those customization, which can be achieved, your developer still need to re-construct code, some customization may need to re-design.

Now you have to use extensions to customize the system, here is a good starting point to learn about new way docs.microsoft.com/.../developer-home-page

Extensions do not require any additional licenses.
