Rename "Work Order"?

Posted on by 1,784

We have a requirement to rename "Work Order" to "Project". Not having PSA installed.

What do you guys think about that? I'm not so happy implementing this because of such a central meaning of Work Order in Field Service.

It would make necessary renaming lots of Sub-Entities.

From time to time MS brings out new Field Service functionality where you always need to catch up also renaming them.

Also with URS/FS I think there are some left overs of PSA (?)

and worst would be if one day the customer decides to add PSA ?? Puh..

Another point: if Users go for searching documentation in Internet it would be harder to find something.

Has anybody done that already, renaming the Work Order, and can share some experience?

Thank you!

Hello and thank you for using the Dynamics communities. As the others have stated you can change the "Display Name" of the entity.  My one concern would be when Field Service has an update to install.  There is a slight chance that the update may try to reference the Display Name of Work Order.

Theres no issue renaming the entity label name. Just may cause confusion down the line :)

You just need to set out a list of Pros and Cons on what it means top change the name of one of the key entities. Then let the customer decide. Aslong as they are aware of what are the possible downsides.

p.s. .... you'll have to go right down to the level of changing tab names on forms and even then there are some plug-ins that have hardcoded messages in them, e.g. the scheduler -- you'll never change them.

    RE: Rename "Work Order"?

When you rename entities and other assets in CDS, you're really just changing the title -- you're not going to change database name "msdyn_workorder" to "project".

It's the organization's call... I.e. given your concerns is the +ve value of changing the titles greater than the -ve.

Maybe you could propose a hybrd of "Project-Workorder" with the understanding that it'll be phased out to just Workorder once the users get used to it.

I have users calling a picklist a work order and am just beginning the easying them toward "picklist".

Bear in mind that when you push back on the "language" of the company that is a common ground for everyone and forcibly move them away from it, it may 1) alienate you and/or 2) cause misunderstandings and reduce efficiencies when people get confusted.
