NAV Database gets locked on shutdown

I am a registered Microsoft Partner and have downloaded the Dynamics NAV 2009 demo. I have this installed on Windows Server 2003R2 on a machine with multiple operating systems. When I shut the machine down and then restart it, the Nav database gets irretrievably locked. It returns a message saying that it the database is in use by another process or user and will not allow any changes or connections in the File Explorer, Navision or SQL Server Management Studio.

My only solution is to start the server in Windows XP delete the database files and then re-install the demo database from the disc.

My question is what services do I need to stop and in what order prior to shut down to get the process or user to release the demonstration database? I do not want to leave my server running all the time!

Any help or advice would be gratefully accepted.

Thanks - I did have a look at the 945 solutions on both MSN and Blogs. The directory rights are OK as are the parameters in SQL Server when it is running. Once it has achieved its corrupt state I can no longer read the Properties, nor can I recover it using the suggested T-SQL commands. I am going to revert back to Dynamics 5 as the easiest solution and leave the Role Client for a later date, as some of the areas that I am entering to solve the issue are new ground. Fortunately this is not mission critical. Many thanks for your help.

The message "the database is in use by another process" is for when the *.fdb file is being used by another process, it does not happen when using the SQL Server option. There are two Classic NAV clients. One is called "CSIDE Client", and one is called "Microsoft SQL Server option for the CSIDE Client". Make sure you are using the SQL Server option.

I'm sure you've done research on SQL server Error 945, did the fix for that have any effect? Did you verify that the files are big enough, and there is modify rights to the file/folder, etc.?

    Hi

    Many thanks for your response.

The NAV database is the SQL Server Cronus demonstration database 6.0 running in SQL server 2005 SP3 with NAV 2009 and the Role based interface.

When I turn off the server the database is left in an unusable state. I have tried shuuting down the Dynamics NAV service and then the SQL server before the server shut down but with no success. When I restart the server and open NAV it will not connect. In SQL server Management Studio attemting anything on the Cronus Database returns an SQL server Error 945 among others.

My next task is to create a virtual hard disk from my server backup and then I can just save the state of the demo machine rather than shut it down!! This is a work around. I just need to learn the software so that I can progress my business interests in Business Intelligence. The alternative is to revert back to NAV 5.0 and leave the role based interface for a later date.

Re: NAV Database gets locked on shutdown

What NAV database are you talking about? Are you trying to open a NAV *.fdb file with the Classic Client, and it errors out there? Do you have a native database server installed? If that's the case then you should be able to simply connect to it by entering the proper servername and database name. If you really want to access the fdb directly then go into services and browse around for the NAV database server service, which you can close from there.
