Comparison of new downloadable VHD and upgrade D365 FO

Hi,

I'm using downloadable VHD for my day to day works, and currently the D365 FO is on version 10.0.32 platform update 56. Since in LCS I notice there is new VHD with version 10.0.37, may I know is there any different between setting up a new VHD or just update my D365 FO ? and what is the pros and cons of setup new environment.

For my current development it self, when first downloaded it is version 10.0.24, then it is upgraded (service update) several times until now is 10.0.32.

Based on this blog: https://devblogs.microsoft.com/powerplatform/vhds-and-ches-with-one-box-deployments-available-now-vhd-finandops10-0-37/ I noticed they're using Windows 2022 Datacenter while mine is 2019. And Visual Studio while have 2019 and 2022, I'm still using 2019 until now.

So is there a big benefit to setup new one, instead keep upgrade D365 FO only through Service Update ?

Thanks.

Personally, I will gladly setup a new environment as not to encounter error as there a change un both the Visual studio and Window server version.

    Hi Tony,

There is for sure a benefit using the latest and greatest. Next to new versions of the software, there might be some improvements in several settings.

In case you would need to support some older versions (customers running on older F&O environments), you would initially need to be on a lower version yourself as well to ensure compatibility.

But will it require more resource though ? such as bigger memory ?
Even the disk space takes doubled (around 250GB now instead usual 125GB). And since it is using Windows 2022 Server, does it consume more memory ? because my laptop is max only 16GB.

    Thanks

The best will be to setup a new VHD.

It looks like the new VHD is Windows 2022 Datacenter.  Our production environment is running Windows 2019.  Will there be a problem running the Development Workstations on 2022 when the actual environment that the code will be deployed to is running Windows 2019?

    Hi,

About the new downloadable VHD ->
Is it possible to shrink the VHD after it is expanded from installation ?

Because it happens that I need this new environment for my testing but my NB only left 200 GB, this is after I deleted some of that which actually I still need.

And got other condition also, as the NB is company NB, so I can't plug external HD (not allowed and port is disabled)

Anyone can share some idea how to overcome when we have limited space for using downloadable VHD.
    Thanks.

    Hello,

I don't recommend shrinking the disks (VHD file) of the VM but if you have to, you can do that in the Hyper-V Manager of course.

I used to have a larger external SSD drive hosting the VHD files. Then it will not impact the operating system and primary drive. Nowadays, I use the new local Unified Development Environment connected to an online environment running on Dataverse and F&O capacity.

    Hi Anton,

Shrinking VHD, also means we have to extract first right ? The 1st challenge for my self is of course how to extract it firstly, since my free disk space 200, and as I know to extract this need around 250 GB or more... :)

Anyway, to shrink VHD, is the "Compact" option in the Hyper-V manager, right ?

    Hi Andre,
Yes, the external SSD is used to be my Goto, until it is prohibited now (even the port is disabled). About the "Unified..." I am absolutely thrilled to try out, I do watch the TechTalk about it : Admin and development experienced. This would be new topic alone. Although I will still need to resolve my problem, before try this new thing. Do you have some kind of "easy" step-by-step thing to setup this Unified ? Or can I ask your assistance, would be greatly honored to have your guidance. :)

    Thanks
