Security role change suggestion

Hi Friend,

I am in a situation, need to modify a role to remove a privilege, but, this privilege is reside in its sub-role. I can’t change sub-role, now I have to move all those duties/privileges from sub-role to this role, then remove sub-role from it.

There are hundreds of them. Is there an easy way to do it?

I understand I can duplicate the sub-role to create a new sub-role, remove the privilege from new sub-role, then assign new sub-role to the role. This means I am creating a new role which only use for the unique situation, no other use. Is this a good practice? would it create confusion down the road?

Many thanks,

I have the same question (0)

    Hi River,

Is this a customized role or a standard one?

    Hi River,

I would follow the second approach of duplicating the role and removing the privilege. You could update the description to something like "DO NOT USE" so that the role isn't assigned to any of the users.

    Hi River,

What exactly do you mean with "hundreds of them"? Are you referring here to roles, sub-roles or privileges? Are you using duties or not (as you mainly mention privileges)?

    Hi Andre,

Yes, that's what I mean, if I need to add them one by one to the role.

but, I figured out a way to easily accomplish it, you can drag and drop those privileges and duties to a role.

    Thanks you guys as always!

I realize this is an old question, but for others who care about the same thing...
It only takes a few clicks to transfer all duties and privileges from the sub-role to the parent role (except the unwanted ones):

Just select all the duties in the sub-role and copy this list. Yes, you can select more than one at a time (select first, move to the bottom, and use Shift to select all clicking the last one).
When adding new duties to the parent role, use the “is one of” clause and paste the copied list. Then mark all the selected records and OK. This way you will add all the duties at one time.
Do the same "trick" with Privileges (and also with Sub roles, Tables if applicable).
