Classic SQL upgrade from NAV5.0 to NAV2009R2

Hi all,

I would like to replace the NAV5.0 client (5.0.26084.0) for the NAV2009R2 client (6.0.32012.0) and stay on Classic mode only.
The MS Upgrade Toolkit Manual mentions that I need to create a new empty NAV2009R2 DB and do a complete data conversion task including moving customizations to codeunits if they are now on current forms.

We were used to just open the database by a newer client and let it do a simple upgrade.
Will that still work if I open the current NAV5.0 DB with a classic 2009R2 client?

The only thing we want to have is a slightly better/stable NAS client (no extra 2009 features needed).
And no RTC for the current environment.

Just a quick win in stability.

Hope other members have great news for me.

Regards,

Colin

I forgot another reason for the upgrade.

The current SQL Server 2005 environment has known issues with indexed views, so we would like to upgrade to SQL Server 2012 (which is compatible with NAV2009R2).

We have some clients that have done this and it has worked for them.  Once change in cal code is that CASE Statement is case sensetive and two object a form were changed to make the variable uppercase.  There was a blog about this in MS site.

Thanks for your quick answer Rashed!

Do you happen to have a link to the MS blog you mentioned?

    Regards,

and this blog talks about enable the web services.  you can have an external scheduling system that connects to webservices and lets the service tier run the process.

    Great Rashed!

So a exe only upgrade is still possible but I have to look into all matrix forms regarding the case sensitive bug. I'll first do the simple exe upgrade in a copy and test it thouroughly.

    thanks again for your help!

    Hi Colin,

As your information, you have done the migrate data part when open NAV5.0 DB with NAV2009R2 client. It is ok when you need only NAS client (may be you need to review some codeunits related to NAS) and no extra 2009 features, because the data structure between NAV5.0 and NAV2009R2 for classic client are the same. In future, if you upgrade to NAV2013 or NAV2013R2, you have to migrate application code part for NAV2009R2.

However, it is recommended to do full NAV upgrade including 2 parts:

    - Part 1: migrate application code. For version NAV2009R2, you can use NAV Developer Toolkit or Merge Tool to build New Custom Version objects.

    - Part 2: migrate data. From version NAV5.0 to NAV2009R2, open NAV5.0 DB with NAV2009R2 client (no need data transform as NAV2009 to NAV2013, especially for Dimension structure), then import all New Custom Version objects.

Hope this information can help you!

    Best regards,
