Hi , All

I am recently thinking of utilizing the DevOps in my upcoming customization of Ax 2012  in my project. I have gone through few articles and vids but I am still bit of confused where to start with. I know there are many tools for each process of Continouse Integration , which we can leaverage. But i am also thinking of using TFS for the developement purpose and wanting to utilize the complete DevOps.

Your kind guidance will be appreciated

    Hi Asim Saeed,

You can find several useful links and information regarding TFS integration in this community thread community.dynamics.com/.../159011 , however, it s not clear what do you mean under "DevOps", what actually do you want to do ?

Thanks for the concern and the link.

Under DevOps means, i need to completely follow my new project milestone using DevOps standards from developing to deployment and TFS will be use in between and other tools to make this possible i believe.

There are no general DevOps standards as there are no general Dev standards nor any general Ops (Operations) standards. Instead of repeating the buzzword, let's rather look at you actual requirements.

I see you want to use TFS, but it's not clear for what and what problems you have with it.

I strongly recommend starting using it for version control ASAP and add automated builds soon as well. Consider if you want to use work item tracking; it's great if you can but many companies prefer to use some legacy systems. Later you can start thinking about Release Management, but I wouldn't try to do it in the first phase.

Are you look to develop and isv module or to do a 'standard' implementation?

In my experience, agile and devops works well for software companies like Microsoft  who can get something in front of specific customers and partners and refine it based on feedback over several beta releases.

However, most end user companies are just not culturally ready for such an approach.

Kurt Havelik posted a lengthy blog post, on his approach to what he calls iterative implementation which will be of interest for you also his blog post on agile pods.

Thanks, However it seems that I am not able to convey what i actually intended to.

My main concern is, How i can leverage this DevOps process to optimize my overall project and deliverable. Before I have already followed the agile and scrum meths as well, So its more of a concern and wanted to know how i can integrate what i am already doing and at the same time make a good use of DevOps.

Just to mention that , I have already worked before on TFS for version control purposes and for build releases.

DevOps is a buzzword, not a process. Saying that you want to "leverage this DevOps process" has little meaning.

You'll really need to leave the marketing lingo and start formulating your actual requirements and concerns, if you want a meaningful discussion.

I am not so sure why we you are saying DevOps as a buzzword as i have seen quite a few companies are opting or intended to opt for the DevOps standards. It may be a market lingo however but it has some potential in it i would say.

    Anyway thanks for the advise.

Can you please educate me and show my any definition of the "standard"? As far as I know, it's quite a vague term used for collaboration of Development and Operations (= DevOps).

I don't dispute the importance of DevOps goals and practices, but it doesn't mean that there is any standard and that DevOps practices on one project aren't completely different from another project (because they develop different things, operate different systems, have different sizes of teams and so on...). You won't make much progress if you keep repeating "I want DevOps" instead of thinking about what problems you want to solve.

I can't tell you without knowing what type of project - and the project team members etc.

there many types of project where such an approach helps but there also many where other approaches like JAD, or SDLC and many more  are better suited.

For an in house isv module, or for a bespoke dev where the end users need something fast but there are many aspects not fully defined and you want early user feedback and to close off some options then an iterative agile approach will make sense.

for a global rollout of a core design with a fixed price and time line that is not going to work as well as a waterfall approach.

Devops is far from a buzzword in theory,  but in practise its often used that way. e.g. cvs that naively state "I do waterfall scrum agile projects" The label doesn't matter its more of a choice (and understanding) of the  philosophy and whether it appropriate for the task on hand. if you understand that and the processes then the question becomes redundant.
