Data Migration when upgrading from AX 2012 to Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations

Dear All,

Please I need tips on how to handle data migration when upgrading from AX 2012 to Microsoft 365 finance and operations

I am currently completing proof of concept of the upgrade, the outcome of which is very satisfactory now. I've been using the Microsoft Life cycle services (LCS) platform and using the upgrade methodology. I've downloaded the Microsoft project plan template (in LCS) which has been populated with steps for the upgrade. This plan has as one of the tasks 'Data upgrade', is this same thing as Data migration. I want to prepare a document on how to handle the data migration aspect of the upgrade from AX 2012 to D365FO. Please any suggestions on what the document should focus on for the data migration.

I have finance background and been learning lot of technical stuff on AX 2012 /D365FO

Thank you for your help

You have two options: migrate your existing database to D365, or start from a clean slate and migrate only master data and opening balances manually, using data entities.

For full upgrade, see this doc: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/dynamics365/fin-ops-core/dev-itpro/migration-upgrade/upgrade-overview-2012

    Hello Nikolaos,

    Thank you for your contribution.

I plan to put the two options on table for discussion, but I tend to prefer the option of migrating the existing database as I could follow Microsoft documentation to get through this option.

However, better option could be to start from a clean slate by migrating only master data and opening balances but I think this might be complex and prone to errors. Any tips  or reference to documentation that can help me explore this option will be highly appreciated.

    Regards

    Fade

    Hi Ludwig,

Thank you for the above link.  I've been working through the sites but at a point got confused as to whether separate data migration was required.

I am back on track following through the document.

    Regards

    Fade
