Number of Lines in a Journal entry

We are trying to view the number of lines in a Journal entry and would like to add this column to the grid for the journal in questions. (I.e. general journal or payment journal). I have go into the personalize the grid and added the "lines" column. I was under the assumption that this column should return the number of lines for the journal in question. It is returning a value for a couple of our journal entries but the vast majority of the are blank. Is there a way to get this "lines" column to populate for all entries or another way to display the number of lines in the journal on the grid page?

Thanks!

Ben

    Hi Ben,

If you are e.g. creating lines using a customization (create or import)  it could be the case that the method to calculate the total number of lines is not called. Then this field can show 0 lines even if there are lines.

When you enter the lines manually, it should update it corrrectly.

Can you verify for customizations or add-ons? If you have an example within standard AX where it is not updated, please tell this as well.

I just manually entered a payment journal, generated the payment , and then posted the journal. At no step during this process did the number of lines on the journal show up correctly.

I can only see some timesheet code updating this field. I think the field is completely obsolete.

These is a method on the table that counts the number of lines. So could you add it as a modification to the form. But you will get performance problems with the form if you add such a count.

Maybe you could tell us a bit about why you want the number of lines to show in grid? There might be some alternative solution.

An end user asked to see the field because it would be an easy way for him to see the number of lines in a Journal. We do import journals through aif or excel but even manually created ones do not total the lines. Of the few rows that do have a value in the lines column they are no different than our thousands of other rows. Is there a way this method could have been called in the background?

Attached is a screenshot of what we are seeing

You might have some code in your system that updates this field. In the AX 2012 R3 I looked, I can only find some Freight invoice details from the table TMSInvoiceTable updating this field.

If you need to have the number ready in the grid, I'd suggest you implement a display method with caching. It will still cost you in performance. If could have this user click a button to get the count, it would be better, so this number is only calculated when needed.
