Can anyone tell me the purpose and function of the Customer Government identification fields?

I would like to understand what the purpose and function is for the Government Identification fields on the Customer Master> Miscellaneous details fast tab.  I have searched and found no information regarding this setup.

    These fields are just for additional information related the customer. Forexample, If customer is a person, you may use here as passport number etc.
