I understand implications of having multiple contacts in the database with the same email address on email delivery and reporting in real-time marketing. I understood outbound marketing to have duplicate detection built in to avoid the same email being sent multiple times to the same email address. In real-time, I thought journeys allowed all contacts in a target segment to pass through the journey meaning one copy of the same email could be delivered for each contact.
I have created a test segment with two contacts, both with the same email address.
I emailed the segment and only one copy of the email was delivered.
In the reports, it shows that there we 2 deliveries, 1 to each contact from the segment.
Only one of the contacts is showing as having opened the email.
I have not enabled frequency capping which I understood from documentation was the way in real-time marketing to prevent multiple deliveries.
My questions are:
- what is determining which contact is seen as opening the email?
- are there scenarios in which 2 copies of the email should arrive?
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
