Will reducing the length of a field to X truncate existing data that is longer than X?

Posted on by 60

We're about to reduce the length of a field from 100 characters to 50, but many records have data in those fields that is over 50 characters long. Once the change is applied, is this data truncated? I realise it won't be possible to save a record that has data longer than the allowed field lengths, but I'm concerned that this change will delete data in our system.

    Hi,

I did some test in my OOB. When I change the maximum length of a field from 20 to 10, the existing records don't have any change. When you open this record, the value in this field will not be truncated. However, when you edit something and need to save the form, it will pop up an error - 'You have exceeded the maximum number of X characters in this field '. That you need to change it shorter to save the form.
