What is the simplest method to upgrade from R2 to R3. I have minimal customization(reports) at the USR layer(which i could re-do after upgrading to R3).

It might not be so much the code that will be causing you an issue in your case but more the expansion in functionality. You would need to re-validate your business process as R3 has a huge amount of new functionality. You would be looking to see the following:
- The processes you used in AX 2012 R2 are still valid
- Does R3 offer better functionality in certain areas.
- Data migration, I would take this seriously as I'm not sure how easily the two systems will map into each other especially if you use WAX/TRAX.
