How would I extract data from an entity's field and then pass this data into an HTML web resource?
This resource would then be used to update another record.

This explains that you need to add to you HTML:
<script src="ClientGlobalContext.js.aspx" type="text/javascript" ></scrip
And you can then call parent.Xrm.* but this needs to be a html web resource inside the form. Out side of the form or sitemap won't work like this.
