Why GP18.2.1036 installations have different Dexterity Shared Components 18.0 (64-bit) version numbers and sizes on Programs and Features screen?

Posted on by 150

GP18.2.1060 server and Client have different Dexterity Shared Components 18.0 (64-bit) version numbers and sizes on Programs and Features screen. On the server, the Dexterity Shared Components 18.0 (64-bit) version and size are 18.00.0015.004 and 5.63 MB. And on the client, the values are 18.00.0021.000 and 25.3 MB.

On the server, GP18.2.1060 was installed as follows:
Install GP2018R2 (DVD download)
Install GP2018 YE2018 18.00.0672 (KB4468818)
Install GP2018 YE2019 18.2.1036 (KB4528419)
Install Dynamics GP 18.2.1060 (Feb2020 Hotfix KB4538329)

On the client, GP18.2.1060 was installed as follows:
Install Dynamics GP 18.2.1013 (First DVD for GP on Modern Lifecycle)
Install Dynamics GP 18.2.1036 (GP2018 YE2019 KB4528419)
Install Dynamics GP 18.2.1060 (Feb2020 Hotfix KB4538329)

Inside the GP application, the Dexterity version is the same (18.00.0021.00) on the server and the client.

What are the possible consequences these Dexterity differences may cause?  Should we install the Dexterity Shared Components on the server using the GP18.2.1013 DVD download on top of our current GP 18.2.1060 installation?

    Hi Derek,

I just want to update you with the result of out test.

I uninstalled the Dexterity Shared Components 18.0 (64-bit) from the Programs and Features list.

Then installed the Dexterity Shared Components 18.0 (64-bit) via the GP DVD (GP18.2.1013) successfully.  Exited the installation at the point right before installing Microsoft Dynamics GP.

According to Programs and Features, the Dexterity Shared Components 18.0 (64-bit) version is 18.00.0021.000 (expected).  And the size is 2.81 MB (very small).  We have not noticed such a small size before.  For your information, GP and GP Utilities can be opened without any error message.

I am not sure if it would affect the size of the dexterity, but the operating system on our virtual server is Windows Server 2016 Standard (64-bit).

The 2.81 MB size has been repeated on our server twice.  How could the dexterity size be so small?  Are we the only one who has experienced and noticed such a small size?  What could Dexterity Shared Component affect?  We plan to migrate to this server next month.  We would be grateful if we get answers to these questions before we go live.

    Thank you,

    Li and Olga

    Hi Derek,

Thank you for answering our second round of questions.

I installed the Dexterity Shared Components (64-bit) using the GP18.2.1013 DVD without uninstalling dexterity on the server.  After the prerequisite of Dexterity Shared Components was successfully installed, I exit the installation program and did not continue with any other GP installation.

The version of Dexterity Shared Components 18 (64-bit) is updated to 18.00.0021.000, which is the version we expected, but the size is even smaller than before.  It is only 2.81 MB, and it was 5.63 MB before the dexterity installation via GP DVD.  How strange!  (I did captured some screen prints for various sizes of dexterity in the Program and Features list.)  By the way, login to GP and GP Utilities on the server are normal without any error message.

We have rolled our virtual server back to when the dexterity was 5.63 MB.  We plan to uninstall dexterity, and then install it with the GP DVD (GP18.2.1013) as you have suggested in the above post.

    Thank you,

    Li

My workstation shows a size of 23.2 MB and the  server 25.3 MB. If you're seeing a Dexterity Shared Components 18.0 (64-bit) at 5.63 MB in size, there was probably something wrong with the install and you can actually uninstall it and reinstall it via the GP DVD, without needing to uninstall and re-install the 18.2.1060 Dynamics GP application itself.

    Thanks

    Hi Derek,

Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

We were thinking about installing just Dexterity Shared Components (64-bits) on the server using the first DVD for GP 18.2.1013 Modern Lifecycle.  And hoping to have the Dexterity Shared Components updated to 18.00.0021.000 with a size of 25.3 MB.  Our concern was that the size of 5.63 MB for dexterity installation on the server is too small compare to other installations of Dexterity Shared Components (for both GP2018 and GP2015).  We are not planning to deinstall and reinstall GP18.2.1060, or any other 3rd party products.

What would you suggest regarding installing Dexterity Shared Components on the server?

    Thank you,

    Li and Olga

On my server and Windows 10 workstation, the Dexterity Shared Components 18.0 (64-bit) both show a version of 18.00.0021.000 when I look under Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.

As of right now, we haven't seen or heard of any issues with anything, including Dexterity, due to different versions of the Dex Shared Components, but then again I'm not seeing it on my test environment.

My thoughts are, as long as it is 18.0, we should be fine.

    Thanks
