Dynamics Ax 2012 r3 connection with power Bi

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

Hi,

I am new to Dynamics AX and wish to connect the AX 2012 R3 to Power BI/Excel. What would be the easiest method?  I tried using the Odata Feed but not sure where to exactly find the IP sever address. The Microsoft AX configuration utility doesn't show up in my computer under the Windows Administrative tools. Also there is just 1 document data source in document data sources in my AX-does this matter?

Can someone help me what URL do I need to put in to make a connection? What will be the server name in this URL and will everything else remain the same as in this url?

 http://<ServerName>:8101/DynamicsAx/Services/ODataQueryService/

However I'm quite sure that your user account doesn't have direct access into your production AX database. Such things would need to be set up and discussed with your IT guys / admins as well as AX "owners".

Yes, one requirement solved. The administrator is another company and I don't have direct access to them unfortunately(I am trying to contact them). But you said you recommend- connecting directly to AX database and not using the Odata. Can you please tell how that's done? or any web links where I can learn as a beginner. I have AX 2012 R3!!

Is your Excel in Citrix? Or on your local machine? I would expect that Power BI Desktop that is running in the same computer than Excel would be able to connect in the same way.

Did you already talk to your administrator? We can't know how your network is set up.

Also I'm not sure about your requirement. You said you want to connect to AX 2012 R3 to "Power BI/Excel". Now you have solved one requirement, right?

Regarding Power BI, I would usually recommend connecting directly to AX database, not the AOS. Since the OData connection will definetely be quite slow. But then you need to be granted access to the database by your system administrator.

In general, if I was the administrator, I would like the users to ask me about these requirements.

Hi, Nikolaos, I tried to connect Excel to Ax 2012 using Get Data>Other Data Sources>Microsoft Query>New data Source> Entered the server name(retrieived from AX system administration, used database name as server name) and it connected! Its still through Citrix. I get lots of table names but I don't understand. Anyways-can't we do the same thing in Power BI?

Seems you are using Citrix to connect to AX. So it's possible that you can't even connect directly from your computer to the AOS server. That would mean you can't connect to the OData endpoint.

Talk to your admin and tell him/her what you want to do. So basically ask the same thing that you posted here originally. We can't help you - all is in the hands of your IT admins.

Thanks again for your reply. It is indeed a shortcut and the properties point to :"C:\Program Files (x86)\Citrix\ICA Client\SelfServicePlugin" but no .axc file there. So,what does this imply? Isn't there any other easier way to connect to Power BI? Cannot we obtain it like this: AX> System Administration>Database >Data Base Administration>LogonServer. I tried this, but unfortunately, doesn't work as well. I tried using this LogonServer obtained from AX  for odata feed   logonservername/.../ODataQueryService .What wrong am I doing? If you think there's no way I can handle this-What exactly should I ask my system administrator?

Often the .axc is the very file that you click to open AX. But you might also have a shortcut that you click, and the shortcut properties point to the .axc file.

The third possibility is that you don't have an axc file, instead you use a configuration from the registry. But if that was the case, you would have AX Client Configuration Utility in your computer.

If this doesn't help, please ask your system administrator.

Thanks for your reply. But where do I find the .axc configuration file? I have Dynamics Ax installed on my system but don't see it anywhere in Program Files or Administrative tools. Would appreciate your help. Just need to connect the AX 2012 r3 with Power BI!

The server name should be the same that you have set up for your client configuration. If you don't have the client configuration utility on your PC, you can open the configuration file (.axc) in Notepad and read the information.

We can't know what is your AOS server address.
