Tracking page visits using Google tag manager

Hi,

We are using Microsoft Customer Insights and would like to track the page visitors on a specific landing page.

We implemented Google Tag Manager within our website. We linked this to Customer Insights using the "web tracking" code. Finally, we created a tag within GTM to track whether any of our contacts or leads visited a specific landing page. To see the output we created a journey using the "Marketing website visited".
When I review the output I can see that this journey is only partially working. I can see that some people visited the landing page and fired the tag, but when I test this myself or a colleague we don't see these results in the journey. So we think it is  not collecting the data from all the visitors on the landing page.

We have already checked the cookies and consent, and because we are receiving some data from GTM this should be right. But the strange thing is that it is working partially.

Do any of you have any ideas about how this is possible or how to solve it?

Thank you very much in advance for your help.

Kind regards,
Sven Pardijs

    Hi,

Had a similar headache before. If tracking works for some users but not all, it’s often about how Customer Insights identifies the visitor. Check if your test visits are actually tied to a known contact. If not, they might not show up in journeys.

Also, double-check your GTM tag firing settings and try testing in a private window with cookies allowed. Ad blockers and privacy settings can block the tag, too. Sometimes there’s just a delay before visits show up.

If you’re still stuck, share a screenshot of your GTM tag setup.

    1. Verify GTM Tag Configuration for Consistency
    🔍 Check Trigger Conditions:
Make sure the trigger for your GTM tag is set to fire on all page views or specifically when the correct URL path or query is matched exactly.
Use Preview mode in GTM to ensure the tag fires consistently for every visitor (including yourself and colleagues).
    🧪 Test Steps:
Go to GTM > Tags > Preview > Enter URL.
    Visit the landing page.
Confirm that the Customer Insights web tracking tag fires correctly.
Confirm no JavaScript errors are present in the console.
    2. Customer Insights Tracking Code & Cookie Matching
For the “Marketing Website Visited” trigger in Dynamics 365 to work:
The tracking script needs to identify the user as a known contact/lead.
    This usually requires:
    Form submission or
Clicking on a tracked email with a personalized link (contains msdyncrm or other tracking parameters).
If you're testing by directly visiting the landing page:
You might not be tracked as a known contact unless you're cookied from a previous tracked email or form interaction.
Check if You're a Known Contact:
Have your test user (yourself or a colleague) click on a marketing email link (from a Dynamics 365 journey).
Then visit the landing page within the same session.
This ensures that the visitor is associated with an actual Contact/Lead in Customer Insights.
    3. Check Customer Insights Settings:
    Go to:
Customer Insights - Journeys > Settings > Default Marketing Settings > Website Tracking.
    Ensure:
    Website domain is whitelisted.
Consent level is respected (if required).
Cookies are being stored with the correct domain.
You mentioned consent/cookies seem fine, but double-check if:
Some users are blocking cookies or using incognito/private mode.
There are browser extensions (e.g. ad blockers) interfering with script execution.
