Hi Community,

I am trying to get my hand on a document which discusses the pros and cons of moving to SQL server 2012 from SQL server 2008 R2 for a AX 2012 implementation.

As a remark - AX 2012 (not R2) will not 'just' work with SQL 2012 (www.microsoft.com/.../Microsoft-Dynamics-AX-2012_R2-System-requirements.pdf).

And regarding core of your question - consider versions of both servers and prices for them; if you would have choice, for example, sql2012 standard or sql2008 enterprise - I would go for 2008; be aware that higher versions of sql server offer bit more features related to BI, which may be useful.

If both sql versions you are considering are same level (i.e. enterprise vs enterprise), then go for 2012.

    regards

    Hi Kumar,

Concerning the post of Tomek, in fact AX 2012 (not R2) is working with SQL Server 2012, but you need a hotfix for AX.

I'm not enough expert in SQL Server 2012, so i won't be able to say if there are performance improvement with this new version.

But if you want to uses only the core functionalities of Dynamics AX, SQL Server 2008 is clearly sufficient.

With SQL Server 2008 you are with a license by CPU, and with SQL Server 2012 it's a license by core, so you have to pay attention to this point carefully if you are not on a licence by Server + CAL ... SQL Server 2012 can be very expensive according the number of core of your server, in comparaison with SQL Server 2008.

If you want to use new Excel Powerview / Powerpivot functionalities (Powerview is integrated in Dynamics AX), then you need SQL Server 2012. To be more precise, you need SQL Server 2012 Entreprise or BI édition + SharePoint Server 2013 ... that have a big impact on licenses.

    Greetings,

    Guillaume

I guess this is all about the additional feature in AX 2012 , in terms of performance there is no definitive answer.
