Starting Point for Security in NAV 2009

Posted on by 2

Let's say we have a relatively new installation of NAV 2009 with around 300 users. Because this is a new installation, all of these users are superusers and there are no profiles assigned or created for any of these users. Everyone has direct access to everything, from part-time employees to the CEO.

What would be some good first steps in starting to secure this NAV installation? Would it be for a profile roll-out? Would we then want to somehow whitelist/blacklist certain areas in NAV for those profiles?

    Hi Edward,

Take a look at mergetool.com's Easy Security products.

    www.mergetool.com/default.html

The Light version is free and quite useful.  We use the paid version, which is even more powerful.  You can record real-time activities in NAV (e.g., creating a PO, posting a journal, etc.) with the SQL profiler and then Easy Security can use the recording to create security roles, automatically assigning the necessary object level permissions required to accomplish the activity that was recorded.

    Regards,

    Rob

This is no small task, we have over 5000 tables and I need to know exactly which ones they need to use, both directly and indirectly and then add those tables to the role. This could potentially take weeks of discovery to find out this information. Is there a better way than this manual process?

You need to start with assigning roles to the users then adding permissions to those user roles. Profiles are meant for configuration and personalization.

Please check this link about roles.
