Has anyone ever seen (and figured out why) Management Reporter might require the user to log in when switching between reports in the same company?

Hi Terry,
There was an issue in an earlier release where generating reports and some other actions using trees may require authenticating several times. It is recommended that if you are on the legacy provider that you have your username and password saved for each company. If you are on Rollup 3 or later you can use the Dynamics GP data mart which does not require individual company authentication and is a better experience.
