Management Report Dimension Math Issue in Reporting Trees

Posted on by Microsoft Employee

Does anyone have trouble getting dimension math to work as expected?

We recently upgraded MR 2.1 to the latest service pack, and one of my reports no longer computes a reporting tree dimension correctly. Has anyone else seen this issue? Is it a bug, or a "feature"?

Background:

Our chart of accounts is set up as Department - Cost Center - Natural Account - Subaccount - Restriction

In a report with Reporting Tree branches, the first 3 rows are as follows:

Company | Unit Name | Unit Desc            | Dimensions

GPWCG   | SUMMARY   | Summary of all units |

GPWCG   | 30        | Executive Office     | +Department = [30] -Cost Center = [3020]

GPWCG   | 3020      | Special Projects     | +Department = [30], Cost Center = [3020]

Prior to the update, Executive Office line would contain activity for everything except Cost Center 3020, and Special Projects would contain only Dept 30, Cost Center 3020.

After the update, Executive Office line contains only Cost Center 3020 activity but with all values reversed. Special Projects still contains only Dept 30, Cost Center 3020 activity.

Any information would be helpful. If this is not a known short-term bug, I will have a bunch of reports I will need to modify.

    You and me both!

Because it is a known outstanding issue, they did not charge it against our account.

hopefully you did not burn a support case to get this confirmation.

Just got a note back from Microsoft support and they confirmed what Greg said in term of the bug and the approximate patch issue date. They did not say anything about multicurrency support, but we do not use multicurrency.

    Thanks all!

    Hi Greg

Are you in a position to say if CU7 will have multicurrency support for datamart?  The last release indicated that it was the last release for legacy MR.  Is that still true and if so does that mean that legacy does not get bug 805974 fixed?

    thanks!

Thanks Greg. We will probably apply that fix as soon as it comes out, since it is supposed to correct an issue with security groups we have run into.

    Hi Robert,

It sounds like you are encountering Bug 805974.  This bug is fixed in CU7, which should be released around the end of the month/first part of November.  There's not a good workaround to this, other than to redesign the tree so that you don't have the subtraction of dimensions.

I just submitted it. I will let you know you all what I learn.

agreed, crude and not elegant.  Slows down report generation.  It forces me to have to continuously vigilant that no one has added something to the Chart of Accounts that breaks one of the ranges named in my dimension value set.

to the MR rep above.  The last time I posted this issue, many users came back saying not an issue for them, I worked on the impression that I have a set up issue within the MR report.

    Robert;

are you going to attempt an SR with GP?

    Good Evening,

I would recommend opening a support case for us to take a look at the report and troubleshoot the issue.

    Thanks,

    Microsoft

    Thanks Ian.

I already did as you suggested - just remove all subtractions, and rework as only addition statements. A crude, less elegant, but effective fix.

However, I can confirm this was NOT fixed in the August release, since that is what we applied that broke minus dimensions in Trees. Perhaps the August release fixed this problem for rows and columns, as I know early on it was also a problem there. Hopefully the November release will correct this issue in Trees.

Microsoft giveth, and Microsoft taketh away.
