SmartList Designer SmartLists taking a very long time to render

I have created custom SmartLists for multiple customers recently using SmartList Designer, and in each case the results take an extremely long time to display (15-20 minutes is not uncommon) if they display at all. I've tried creating custom SQL views to reduce the number of columns and rows in the results but this has not helped the processing time.

Has anyone else experienced this? Does anyone have tips for increasing the rendering speed of these custom SmartLists? Thank you!
