Best Practice for NAV Initial Company Setup

Posted on by 255

Hi,

In Cronus sample data, a lot of information are populated in the Package (PackageBASICCONFIG) such as country names, country codes, postal codes, currency etc which can be reused in any NAV setup for a new company.

I would like to know what is the best practice (fastest and easiest) to setup a new company ("NewCo") :

1. Import PackageBASICCONFIG from Cronus to NewCo, apply package and start working on configuration worksheets

2. Import PackageBASICCONFIG from Cronus to NewCo, do not apply the package yet. This step is performed only to save time from creating the Configuration Worksheet manually. Then, start working on configuration worksheets

3. Start NewCo from scratch, add worksheets manually, and continue working on worksheets. Any large reusable data from Cronus such as country names etc are imported manually to the relevant table in NewCo.

Well I somehow succeed to export and import Config Worksheet lines (but it was no way logical). I thing a minor redesign of this part should be considered.

You say that it is possible to transfer (export/import) Config Worksheets between companies or databases? Could you please explain in short how? From what I can read and have tried Config Worksheets have to be manually made from the bottom and that is not "working smarter" I call it "working harder"

Hi ASA, it depends on how much information you want copied from the Cronus database into your new company. You might want to add a filter to the BASICCONFIG export for certain tables so there is no data from those tables but just the config package itself for use for filling out import sheets - this way you get the worksheets without all the data. But I wouldn't apply the BASICCONFIG package until you have set the correct data on every sheet.

    Normally, I prefer Option 1.

As RockWith NAV mentioned, RapidStart services would be the fastest way to setup the company. Refer more here:

You can select needed data that you can utilize, especially that one that you have mentioned; I would add the number of series setup as it is usually time-consuming.
