Investment project -

I am looking to detail out how a project would be associated to a fixed asset and upon completion the WIP costs would increase the value of the fixed asset.

I know I can use an internal project and do something similar to that but it still requires me to do a write up of the fixed asset manually, I believe.  So is the investment project truly working where I can eliminate the WIP to the fixed asset and it will increase its value?

If so does anyone have insight to how the investment project, estimates that are needed for the investment project, and how to write up an associated fixed asset would work?

Thanks

With an investment project, project costs are capitalized in WIP accounts on the balance sheet.  Investment projects use the estimate system much like fixed price projects.  When the estimate is 100% complete, the project can be eliminated to an existing fixed asset which will move the costs from the WIP accounts and capitalize it on the fixed asset.  There is an advanced project accounting video on CustomerSource / PartnerSource that walks through an example of running an investment project on R3.

    Cheers, John

    Hi John

Please provide link to the video on processing investment projects (I've not been able to find it - I've found the one T&M and FP projects (but for the FP CoP walkthrough).

    Thank you.

    Hi John ,

What do you mean by existing fixed asset and how the costs will move to new Fixed Asset ?

Could you explain in detail ?

You need to have a fixed asset already set up in the fixed asset module or create a new one in the fixed asset module.  The estimate system in Project will not automatically create a new one for you.  Then in the estimate you chose that asset to eliminate the investment project to.  When you eliminate, the estimate system will then credit the WIP account for the costs and debit the fixed asset.

I can't provide you a direct link since it is in PartnerSource / CustomerSource.  But, since I assume you can get to itacademy.microsoft.com, search for course "80644, "Project Management and Accounting - Advanced in Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R3"  In the course will be "Module 7: Advanced Project Accounting".  The last section of it will have a topic "Advanced investment projects"  There is also a practice lab using a simulated environment (no VM required) that will walk you through the investment project estimation and elimination process.

John, Can the project cost be capitalized to multiple assets when you eliminate the project?
