Hello,

I have made little modification in one method in Development environment.

Is it enough to just import xpo file in other environment or it should be done with some other way?

Thanks.

The correct answer is: it depends. :-) And there are also different way how to deal with .xpo files.

Let me point out a few important points:

    • Can you just import xpo file? If there is any risk of conflict, you can't. You have to compare changes first and decide that you either can import the whole .xpo file, or you have to merge changes. For example, one of objects in the .xpo may have changes belonging to another modification and wouldn't even compile.
    • Do you want to assign a new ID in the target environment? If you don't want, you must export and import the .xpo with IDs or to move the whole layer.
    • Do you have any other dependencies, such as labels? If so, you will need additional steps.
    • Are you done when you import an .xpo file? No, you have to, at least, compile the application and synchronize database.

In general, moving code by .xpo files is fine if we're talking about development environments and you're careful enough. It's highly advisable to limit it to minimum, though, because it's manual, time consuming and doesn't guarantee that everything is moved or merged correctly. I see AX environments with corrupted code and IDs all the time. :-(

You shouldn't use them to deliver anything to customers, you should use layers in that case. (Models / model store in AX 2012.)

    Hi Martin,

I have compared the cup and syp layers for that method and have merged code what was needed.

    I'm working on Ax2009
