Hello,
I am preparing my D365-FO development environment and I have been suggested to acquire a VS 2015 Pro license for Visual Studio Tools based X++ development.
- Source: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/dynamics365/fin-ops-core/dev-itpro/dev-tools/development-tools-overview
However, this documentation page is since 2017, there are newer Visual Studio versions available since then, and I wonder what is the best VS version and license to use for a single or multi developer(s) development today.
Any suggestion on that will be highly appreciated.

If you are using DEV Enviorments (or SandBox) provided by Microsoft Still VS 2015 is working without issue. its still working with VSTS /Azure Devops .
So better use as it is so you wont face any unexpected issues.
Thanks & Regards,

Thank you Amith,
I am using Azure DevOps and wish to develop for all kinds of D365-FO environments (including SandBox).
Do you think VS 2015 Pro is the best option for that, or should I purchase a newer VS version instead, i.e. VS 2019 Pro?
Best regards,
My opinion is to avoid unnecessary issues might arise in between , good to use as it is with VS 2015 ,
but if you really need to use VS 2019 please use this thread for more information
community.dynamics.com/.../update-to-visual-studio-2019-for-msdyn365fo
while latest version may look good, using stable and supported version could save ton of effort
I've been experimenting with VS2019 and it generally runs fine. It does requre you to enable Synchronous extensions loading and will occasionally throw exceptions at you, but for the most part you can safely ignore them.
Unfortunately not everything is so smooth with VS 2019 and sometimes it behaves. More often than I would tolerate there were strange situations (like for example the code would not compile in VS and it would without problems in VS2015) that made me forget about newer versions of VS than VS2015 until Microsoft gives officially green light for it. It's just not worth the time to struggle with VS2019 and wonder if the problem you're facing comes from your error in code or maybe it is related to using VS2019.
As a side note Joris de Gruyter on yammer has anounced that in future version of OneBox VHDs they will include VS2017, so keep that in mind when purchasing a licence (sorry for a screenshot and not a link, but most of yammer groups require registration and not everyone here may have access to them):

Thank you for all answers!
Due to the feedback received, I also think it is better to stick with VS 2015 to avoid unnecessary & confusing issues and overhead experienced with VS 2019.
Btw, what about VS 2017?
Any previous experience with that?
The picture has been removed as Yammer is only for Dynamics insiders with a level of non-disclosure. You can signup for this program on experience.dynamics.com.
Microsoft will move to VS2017 side by side with VS2015 and thereafter move to VS2019.
I haven't tried it yet, by I have information that VS 2017 works fine. You just have to have VS 2015 installed as well, because there are some dependencies on VS 2015.
Consider a Visual Studio Cloud subscription instead of a license key. They are roughly the same in price (although granted, that's only for a 1 year subscription - but online I see it's retail price is $45/month which is $540 versus $499 for a license key) and they are version agnostic, meaning you can move along Visual Studio versions as D365FO moves along versions as well. There are a few extra benefits to the subscription as well but not sure if they are interesting for you.
We will move our tools from 2015 to 2017, and likely 2019 shortly after. I don't have an exact timeline but definitely this year things will start changing.
Hi ,
Multiple developer prone development can be easily achieved by Visual Studio Professional Edition (Any Version starting from 15). All you need is to setup VSTS in a right way and use the same in LCS. Once VSTS is in place multiple developers can easily check in and check out their code when they want.
So do not spend money on higher editions. Pro with Azure Devops Access(VSTS) can be helpful in all your desired scenarios.
Thanks and Regards
