Would like to confirm my understanding of how PO's are linked to projects. I understand that in AX 2012 that when raising a PO or requistion you can select the project you wish the PO to be linked to. This then inturn inherits the financial details of the project? Is this correct?

Also, what significance does project category have? I am thinking of creating a new project category called 'PR0' to differentiate what projects are actual project work and which are for just standard maintenance (given that every object has a project number)

    Hi Smithy, Your understanding about PO and PR are correct.  You can create any project category, however remember to do all the required setups (Refer www.loganconsulting.com/.../Microsoft-Dynamics-AX-2012-Project-Categories-Shared-Categories-and-Category-Groups-Whats-the-Difference)

    A few functional things to understand about Project PO's that I wish had been explained to us:

    • A PO is either a Project PO when it is set up or it is not.  Once it has been created you cannot change this.  You can move it to another project and specify a differant project line by line.
    • The PO will inherit the default financial dimentions of the project, the PO lines will inherit from the PO.
    • When you open a project and look for project PO's only the PO's with that project in the header will be visible.
    • By default (well, it was for us) when you make a Project PO using inventory the inventory will be consumed upon recipt.  This can be changed.

    Project category works like procurement category.  A project category is required for every transaction in a project.  It is one method for determining the GL impact.  The financial route for projects overrides that of your normal inventory and is specified here:

    PMA>Setup>Posting>Ledger posting setup.
