Restoring AX database

Scenario: I want to restore the AX database to new server. (In both server the version of AX and Server and everything other is same).

FYI,

1. I tried restoring database by clicking on existing database and selected files to restore. Only modelstore database got restored not other 2. If modelstore can why can't other 2 databases restored in this way.

2. deleted 3 AX database and restored the new database then installed AOS and successfully restored.

I want to know the proper way of restoring in my scenario.

Deleting the previous databases should be one of the proper ways to go. In this scenario you don't have to worry that the database is still in use, and as a result can't be overwritten (this is what happened in case 1). When you restore the database and don't delete the old ones, you should select Overwrite options as well as Close existing connection (I assume the AOS is stopped in all cases).

    Hello Cordobin,

    Thank you for quick response.

yes AOS is stopped in both case.

I am still facing some user problem after restoring. If you can share the document/blog/ procedure for full restoration procedure that will be helpful.

Restoring DB is not a good practice. This should be avoided 100%, when it comes to production environments.

Yes if you do have a test system, you may think to play with it.

Every system do has some metadata, which is needed to run system, the same is for AX. There are couple of tables that should not be overridden.

If you have restored Database, you must fix data of those tables. One prominent example of this is userInfo table, where SID of user is very vital. Having that SID wrong may lead to stop of AOS service.

So, you must be doing two things if you have thought of DB restore.

    1. Take backup of tables which have important metadata

    2. Restore database with override option

    3. Restore back those tables which has metadata.

Note that if you are failing at point#2, you should discuss this on SQL Server Forum, where experts of the area can guide you better than AX Experts.
