Performance monitor counters ... How to analyze

(0) ShareShare

Hi all,

I can get the list of Performance counters to observe for a production set up for Dynamics AX at this link.

What I am unable to find is what to do with these numbers.

For SQL counters I can get some information for AOS, Client I do not know what to do with the result data.

What I mean is that once I get numbers for these counters how do I know that there are issues/peaks etc. Is there some statistics or method to figure that out.

Any such pointers should help.

    Hi,

In my experience these counters could quite useful when investigating the performance issues. Set up the counters and collect information when the environment is running with the acceptable performance. Then do the same if the performance drops. Compare "number of sessions", "bytes sent/received" and "server/clients requests".

Although analysing cache counters is less obvious. I hope one day Microsoft will publish some recommendations for it.

What is important is to collect a baseline of your environment. Then you track heavy changes and understand why these are occuring. Each counters have specific meaning and you will have to get into these slowly as it's quite technical. For example, buffer cache hit ratio on SQL and page life expectancy counters, can indicate memory pressure. Actions plan could lead to optimizing querie or adding RAM. For some counters, you can find guidelines, for example SCOM has internal guidelines which trigger an alert when specific counters goes above a specific number. However, it's hard to find generic guidelines because there is none. It all depends on your environment and specific workload. Data need to be corralated. Track your user performance issue like any bug, with enough information such as date, time, AX functions, screen. You can then get have a look into your perfmon counters collected to see something unusual that can help you understand where the pressure is. What's important is to collect data so that when something occur, you have data before and during the unforseen event.
