We recently lost our IT person and I am new to Great plains so trying to find answers

I would start by going to

Cards->Payroll->State Tax and then enter the employee and then see if the state has been assigned to this employee.

What screen are you on? Transactions->Payroll->Payroll Transaction Entry?

If so, after you enter the employee's time, if you click the More Detail icon do you see a state there? This icon is in the upper right-hand corner of the grid. Looks like two arrows pointed downward.

i am actually trying to commit his time, transactions-time track-time card commit

time has been entered on time card entry with time and job #

so now need to commit the batch to post time to job and then into the payroll batch

i just went to transactions and manually entered 1 hour of time to see and yes when you drop down detail it shows the correct state entered

Also, when on the Employee Maintenance screen for this new employee, click the Go To button and then Tax Information. Set the Tax Withholding State default value for future data entry. You can also do this by Cards->Payroll->Tax.
