Hi,
Does anybody have issues with performance with NAV 2016 on SQL 2014? We find it really slow for thing such as running native reports (especially item availability report), Jet Reports, Data import/export via Configuration Package.
Maybe our expectations are really high as we have moved over from an IBM iSeries DB2 database where it could transfer thousands of transactions per second. However, importing 10,000 can take over 10 minutes. Our server is running on a SQL 2014 database with win 2012 R2 x64 (48GB RAM, Inet Xeon E5 2.6GHz) with only 20 users.
Surely this is not normal and something can be done to improve performance?

Keeping the NAV service & Database on the same server also affects your performance.
But with just 20 users don't seems the issue.
What other software are installed and are begin used on these server, and how user are connecting the NAV RTC.
Have you managed to resolve your issue?
i can confirm you there are no any drag situation on NAV 2016 - SQL 2014
things may be your platforms , VM , Network security filters
Check what is the VM setting of priority access to the disk array - change it from "normal" to "high", this should increase the performance.
The issue may pertain to the physical Hyper V server: storage type / speed (old SANs or HDDs vs SSDs) can make a big difference in performance. Or it may relate to how resource intensive the other virtual machines on your physical host are.
I once had a client who had recurring performance issues on their virtual server, and I was able to demonstrate to them that deploying NAV on a low spec physical server (or a workstation - for testing) can yield better performance than putting it on a virtual server that may have higher specs assigned to it, but sits on a physical Hyper V server with multiple other virtual machines with resource intensive demands.
You can also test - for comparative purposes - a NAV deployment on a similar spec'ed server on Microsoft Azure.
I hope this helps. Please click Yes to "Did this answer your question" to verify my response if it has.
We have one hyper v server running about 6 VMs. The specs in my first post relate to the one VM that runs NAV.
We have all 3 tiers installed on the one Virtual server. I.e. Server 2012 R2 running sql 2014 plus NAV server plus RTC. We also have the RTC installed on a RDS server and various domain connected PCs.
The performance is slow running the RTC directly on the server as well as domain connected PC.
What is your configuration of the tiers? Do you have application server on the same server that runs database or on a different one? Do you apply virtualization?
