Monthly Cycle Counts in Microsoft Dynamics AX; 2012-R2

We are almost a year post go-live with Microsoft Dynamics AX, 2012-R2.   We are required to do monthly full physicals reporting.   As we progress each month with running the count journals, we are experiencing count journal create times getting longer and longer.   I expected this to some degree.   Some information:

1)  There is no modification to AX 2012 surrounding the cycle count journals.

2)   We have run it both via a batch job directly on the server and via user session.   Both takes awhile.

3)  We do not include any 0 inventory lines, and we do include reserved material.

4)  We run the journal for all items at once; do not use count groups or break it down by any other methodology.

5)  Run the count journals by the on-hand option, not by item or expired batches.

6)  Report is now taking >2 hours to complete; which is expected because the number of batches and transactions increases every month

My question comes to, is there any parameters to check to decrease this time frame or has anyone done any code modifications to address an issue similar?  We have a SQL report that we have developed that mimics the on-hand report in AX (just with more information).   A wide open run of this report doesn't take longer than 20 minutes and has the same information that is in a count journal.  I would expect a count journal to work closer to 20 minutes than greater than 2 hours.

Thanks to anyone in advance that can help or provide any kind of recommendations!

    Hi Richocet,

The counting journal is not created only based on the On-hand inventory table (InventSum) in  AX. As you can specify a counting date, AX also looks in to the inventory posting transactions.

If you are not running inventory models 'Standard cost' and 'Moving average', you can run the Inventory closing to "close" On-hand inventory.

If you are using batch numbers, as of Cumulative Update 7 for AX 2012 R2 it is possible to clean up On hand entries: technet.microsoft.com/.../dn505749.aspx.

It could also be related to fragmented SQL indexes. As the counting journal is creating new Inventory journal lines, with some related tables, please check if the SQL maintenance also does a re-indexing of the tables. Is a fill factor specified for the SQL database, so some free space is reserved on index pages for new records that needs to be inserted?

    Hi, Andre!

Thanks so much for the feedback.   We are running standard costs, so I'm assuming that the first suggestion above would not be of any help.    Also, we don't have the Cumulative update 7 for R2 (we use batch numbers), so not sure what other options we have there to clean up data.

We are going to be looking into the indexing, so hopefully that will speed things up, but I think a clean up of the data might be the key.   Any other recommendations?

Thanks so much for the reply!!

    Hi Richocet,

Thanks for the feedback and good luck with the indexing.

It is possible to install subsets of CU7. SO probably you can search if the update for clean up on hand entries is separated from the big update with dependent objects.

    Hi,

Could you help/advise me where can I find more info about 'Inventory Closing' prerequisites and limitations, please ? (for example - 'standard cost' inventory model does not allow you run 'Inventory Closing'

    Thanks

    Hi Witold,

There are several pages on Inventory close on TechNet. Start, for example, with this one:

    technet.microsoft.com/.../gg232187.aspx

If you have access to CustomerSource, there is also a Hands On Lab which is interesting:

    mbs.microsoft.com/.../courseHOLCIVAX2012

In answer to your question, items with the Inventory models 'Standard cost' and 'Moving average' are ignored by inventory close (but you might still want to run it to close inventory periods).
