Nav 5 sp1 Trying to get Business Analytics up & running

I've run into a little snag and research says I need to obtain the newest ndbcs.dll to allow NAV on one SQL server and the Analytics portion on a separate server.

Also configurator.exe is giving an error, there is a known newer version.

Here is my challenge - the VAR contacted Microsoft, they have opened a problem and now it's the weekend.  Is there any source from which I can obtain these 2 newer objects to try out on my test server prior to Monday?

    Hi Bryant,

I am one of the NAV engineer who takes BA cases and I can tell you I am not aware of any such method of getting BA to work where SQL is on a different server than the configurator. Dynamics NAV 5.0 SP1, however, does have two hidden fields which you can make visible by right clicking to input your SQL named instances.

Having said that, we always recommend that configurator is run on the server where SQL is installed as a default instance. If there is a cluster runninf then having the BA solution outside the cluster on it's own server is the only method we have tested this with. We have asked targit and they have verified that the OEM version they gave us was never tested on cluster environment.

If you are a partner and have access to partner source then you can download the latest version from the following link:

    https://mbs.microsoft.com/partnersource/downloads/releases/nav40ba.htm?printpage=false

Try following the KB article 940678 -

How to create a simple test cube to test the Business Analytics configurator in Microsoft Dynamics NAV 5.0

    Hope this helps.

Interesting.  We actually did get it working.  The partner downloaded the most recent of the dll and configurator and we're up & going.  I can build a sample cube.

The next snag is ...  I would like to take advantage of the default cubes that came with the software.  The process is erroring out on the SSIS part.  The partner contacted MS support, they said it's no wonder the default won't run against a live database, it was meant for Cronus.  However, I'd still like to get it working and take advantage of their configuration samples.  Is there an error log to tell me what portion of the cube definitions is failing?

     Thank you very much,

    Ann

Hi Ann, To be honest I really do not see the point of using the demo cubes on the customer's environment. It would be a lot beneficial to sit with them and discuss their need for custom reporting and BI. This is the route majority of partner's go when they purchase BA.

The support engineer is correct in saying that the demo cubes are based on and meant for Cornus. You see the demo cubes are built over large area of Cronus. What we see if that when partner's try and use the demo cubes most of the time it will fail because most customer do not have permission to all the tables the demo cubes are trying to access due to license limitations (purchased granules are always limited). Another issue is that other tables which the demo cubes are simply empty on the customer database.

So the answer is still the same, you will have to find a way to tune and tweak the dem cubes to work on the customer's environment which will be ore troublesome than building custom cubes as per their requirement. You can access a BA demo script on the partner source to familiarize yourself with the cube building process:

    Hi Zeeshan,

i'm not sure if my question follows the above ones, but i still asking :-)

In Nav 5.0 can I configure a SQL Analysis Server and BA Server in other machine than NAV SQL Server, using same NAV license?

It makes sense to me to configure BA Server license to use any SSAS databse instead of put all in the same server (NAV SQL Server and SSAS) and use only cubes generated by configurator. But is this possible?

     Thanks in advance

    JM

    Hi Joan,

It doesn't but thats ok :)

Well from what I can understand from your post, you can install the BA Ant Services on any server where you have SQL server, Analysis Services and Integration Services installed. You can use BA Advance client to access any OLAP cubes in Analysis Services (change connection settings from enterpriswe manager of BA). However you will need to import the license through the configurator else you will only have 30 day access to the BA client.

If you are not going to use the configurator then I suggest you purchase BA directly from Targit as they provide an XML license which can be imported from the BA enterprise manager without needing the configurator.

    Hope this helps.

    Hi,

I installed NAV 5.0 SP1 client on our SQL server where SSAS and SSIS are installed (which is not the same server as where SQL databases for NAV).

when I run the configurator, I have this error:

Table server is empty. The program is not able to determine server settings.

     Help me please !!
