When Knowledge Base is selected it doesn't show any results

We have modified the code to hide the results of Knowledge Base articles from showing up.  Now, we would like to show them, but we can't remember what we changed.  Any help is appreciated.

When we select the Knowledge Base on the Home Page from the graphic below-

We receive this, with no option to search or results displayed.  Can you help?

    I may have found a solution-  please help me to understand if this is accurate.

    Published external articles require categories to be searched on the knowledge base page?
