Posting layer period control at month/qtr/year end

Hi All,

We have this scenario that I currently don't have an answer to.

Our global finance teams utilise the

  • Current posting layer to post US GAAP entries
  • Operations layer (renamed) for some Local GAAP Adjustments
  • Custom Layer(s) for IFRS and other adjustments.

At month-end, when the Current layer is already reported against, there is no way (that i'm aware of) to close this layer for posting for a given accounting period, but still allow users to post to the Operations or other Custom layers for their adjustments.

We currently workaround this by leaving the accounting period OPEN, but attached a User Group within Ledger Calendar, limited to the users posting the adjustments, to reduce any risk of accidently posting to the Current layer. However, for these users, the Current layer is still open for posting, presenting a risk.

We've been able to manage this to date, but it appears the use of layers is growing and more Finance teams will be using it, with the impact on managing the access becoming too onerous.

Anyone else had similar issues and how they were worked around?  Really trying to avoid a massive customisation to add this control.

Thanks

Simon

Thanks all - I did post an idea a week or so ago to cover this scenario.  Only hope I articulated the requirement enought.

    feel free to vote :)

    Hi,

If it is a possible option for you, you can differentiate main accounts based on layer (e.g. current accounts, IFRS accounts, etc), then use date fields on main accounts (like active from).

    Regards.

    Hi Simon,

Per today on Ledger calendar, we dont have possibility to choose layer of posting when we want to use "Update module access". The workaround that you mentioned is a practical to be used for this purpose or manage each module to avoid fail posting for a specific periods. For example, some set a user group (e.g. Accounting dep) for each module for future periods to avoid posting with fail voucher date. Like Lucas said, it would be great to register as an idea on experience.dynamics.com/

    Hi Simon,

If you suggest an idea and share it on social media then we can vote for it :-)

Would be great if you could do that.

Otherwise, you need to have a talk with a developer to see what can be modified to avoid / circumvent this problem.

    Best regards,

    Ludwig

    Hi Simon,

Have you thought of posting this on the Ideas site to bring some awareness on the development side as something we could potentially address in a future release?

Otherwise, we can also wait to see if there are any others out there with some insight on this scenario.
